Growing up, my musical roots were deeply intertwined with family. My father, a prominent figure in the entertainment industry, introduced me to the magic of soul music through his work as a radio DJ. A pioneer in his own right, he became a beloved voice on the airwaves, sharing the soulful sounds of the ’60s and ’70s with millions of listeners across the Southern markets. His influence extended to California, where he hosted the acclaimed television show “Operation Soul,” showcasing top musical talent of the era.
In our household, music wasn’t just a passion – it was a way of life. I had the privilege of meeting iconic figures like Ike and Tina Turner, B.B. King, and Wilson Pickett, who frequented our home and shared their artistry with our community. These experiences provided me with a firsthand education in the art of entertainment, instilling in me the skills and passion that define my musical journey today.
My musical journey began in a serendipitous way – on a flea market adventure with my mother in my Texan hometown. It was there that I stumbled upon a treasure, a 78-RPM record on the Columbia Records label featuring the Les Brown Orchestra with Doris Day singing “Sentimental Journey”. That record became the soundtrack to my youth, played on repeat until I wore out more needles than my allowance could afford. Raised on a diverse musical diet of Soul, R&B, Blues, and Rock, I found my musical home in the soulful embrace of Neo-Soul, a fusion of these genres with the poignant, spoken-word style reminiscent of the beatnik soul generation.
My path led me from Dallas, Texas to the vibrant musical scene of Atlanta, Georgia, where I launched my career in jazz vocals. Witnessing one of the final performances of the legendary Sarah Vaughan at Atlanta’s Piedmont Park was a defining moment. It ignited a fire within me to pursue jazz vocal performance with fervor. Living in the heart of Midtown Atlanta, I was surrounded by a kaleidoscope of artistry, from jazz clubs to talented musicians of every stripe. I forged invaluable working relationships with skilled musicians, arrangers, and composers, honing my craft through performances at open-mic nights across the city.
A Return to Roots
Taking a hiatus from singing, I delved into the worlds of dance and acting, all while immersing myself in the timeless recordings of female jazz vocalists from the 1930s to the 1960s. These pioneers, including Sarah Vaughan, Carmen McRae, Billie Holiday, and Nina Simone, became my muses, shaping my musical style. My education extended beyond vocalists to the brilliant composers and musicians who defined the eras, such as Cole Porter, George and Ira Gershwin, and Antonio Carlos Jobim.
Though my father never pushed me into the spotlight, he knew that the call of music was undeniable in my blood. Now, I stand on the shoulders of those who came before me, weaving together the rich tapestry of jazz, soul, and heartfelt storytelling into my own musical legacy.
